Chinook hops were released in 1985, originally cultivated from a Golding strain, this hop quickly gained popularity in American style pale ales and I.P.As. Chinook has excellent bittering potential with alpha acids in the 12% to 14% range but its resiny, piney aroma makes it a wonderful hop for late additions and dry hopping. This hop is not limited to the Pale/IPA styles, however. Its heavy aroma, which has been described as almost smokey, lends itself well to porters, stouts and seasonal beers. Chinook hops are currently available at Barley’s Homebrewing Supplies in pellet form.
